“I see…” he said.

Catalina could see that he was deliberating something.

“Will you take this,” she asked, holding out Terze Rime towards him.

He stared at it, and then he looked questioningly at her. “I gave it to you,” he said.

“I know, but I’ve already read it. I don’t need it anymore.” She was grateful for the veil, it hid her from his eyes. Her self-assurance wouldn’t have lasted if she had to face him without some form of defense.

He hesitantly took the book, wordless as he paged through it briefly, and then his gaze settled on her again. It was as if he could see right through the veil. Catalina froze, holding her breath, feeling his eyes penetrate into hers.

“I enjoyed every moment I shared with you, I want you to know that…” She heard the tremor in her voice as she spoke. She didn’t know how much longer she could last without falling apart. “May I write you?” she asked hesitantly.

“Of course,” he said, his voice was low, almost a whisper.

He held out his left hand towards her, and Catalina was almost certain she saw it quiver. She took it, hating that she was wearing gloves. She wanted to pull them off just to feel the touch of his skin again.

He placed his right hand upon hers. “I will pray for your safe journey,” he said.

“Thank you,” Catalina replied briskly, and then she turned quickly and fled.

Once she was alone, safe inside the carriage, she let the tears stream down her face. She glimpsed out the window and saw Benedict standing there, a dark figure in a cold and empty street, gazing at the carriage as she rode away.
